About Us
Murray Valley Winegrowers' Inc. represents the interests of some 1,000 winegrape growers within the boundaries of the rural cities of Mildura and Swan Hill in Victoria, and the shires of Wentworth, Balranald and Wakool in New South Wales. This area takes in the Geographical Indicators (GIs) of Murray Darling and Swan Hill in which more than 20,000 hectares are planted to wine grapes. Major varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Colombard, Merlot, Ruby Cabernet, Semillon and Shiraz. The multi-purpose varieties Sultana and Gordo are also produced in significant quantities.
The annual winegrape crush of more than 300,000 tonnes makes the Murray Valley one of the largest wine regions in Australia.
MVW is the umbrella body for three regional industry organisations - Mildura Region Winegrowers' Association, Robinvale & District Winegrape Growers’ Association and Swan Hill Wine Region Grape Growers’ Association.
Much of the wine responsible for the resurgence in the Australian wine industry over the past ten years is processed by the wineries of the Murray Valley. The major international wine companies in the region include Australian Vintage, Orlando Wines, Foster's Wine Estates and Constellation Wine Company. Other wine companies based in the Murray Valley include Andrew Peace Wines, Deakin Estate (Wingara Wine Group), Trentham Estate and Zilzie Wines.
In representing winegrape growers, MVW provides a range of services, including:
- Data collection, analysis & communication;
- Information collection and communication regarding grape supply & demand, production & projections, domestic & export wine sales, industry performance and issues, research & development;
- Policy development and representation;
- Regional R&D identification & coordination;
- Representation of issues to government, industry bodies, wineries and media.
