Grower Membership

All winegrape growers in the Murray Valley, which includes the rural cities of Mildura and Swan Hill in Victoria and the Shires of Balranald, Wentworth and Wakool in NSW, automatically belong to the Murray Valley Winegrape Industry Development Committee via the payment of a statutory levy.

This is subtracted by wineries from grape payments at the rate agreed by growers when voting for proposed projects at a meeting called by the IDC near the end of each calendar year. The levy is associated with the Murray Valley Wine Grape Industry Development Order (Victoria), which comes within the ambit of the Agricultural Industry Development Act.

Membership of Murray Valley Winegrowers' Inc (MVW) is via voluntary levy.

This is deducted at the same time as the statutory levy, but at the rate of 0.50 cents per tonne.

If growers' contact details are included in the MVW database, then MVW assumes that they wish to remain part of the organisation. Given the rate of change in the industry it is possible that some winegrape growers are not on the database and therefore not receiving the bi-monthly newsletter or invitations to seminars and the like. A call to MVW on 03 5021 3911 will establish the situation. Growers may decline MVW membership but must do so in writing by June 30 each year.

The benefits of belonging to MVW are many, the major one being that growers have an immediate and influential connection to industry activities, developments & trends etc. MVW also represents growers at various industry and government forums. The services from which growers derive benefits include:

  • Communication of industry news, views, issues and R&D via the bi-monthly newsletter Murray Valley Winegrowers' Grapevine
  • Data collection, analysis & communication
  • Information collection and communication regarding grape supply & demand, production & projections, domestic & export wine sales, industry performance & developments, research & development
  • Policy development and representation
  • Regional R&D identification & coordination
  • Representation of issues to government, industry bodies, wineries and media
  • Wine Grapes for Sale Index as a means of selling uncontracted fruit throughout vintage
  • Coordination of grower action to obtain fairer outcomes.
